Undone

You were meant to be free
And now I clearly see
It was the lack of walls that
Kept you coming back to me

For a time we learned to disagree
And reach beyond our selfish needs
Become what we could only be
In a place where love is free

And at times it was enough
This stubborn choice to be so tough
To choose to stay and stand our ground
When others chose to tear us down

But still you have always been free
To choose to walk away from me
Your freedom it was my demise
And I’m left, the unwanted prize

Love can’t be taken, it’s a choice
To give it took your pride and voice
And some days you gave what you had
On days it didn’t hurt so bad

But other days you held on tight
Your freedom was your choice, your right
You always had the will to stay
And equal will to walk away

And you refused to settle in
Weakness could never be your friend
You needed to win, you knew that you must
Winning was the only thing you could trust

It kept you insulated from
A life where you might come undone
But I still love you like before
Life is not meant for keeping score

Your competition has its edge
But my love will win in the end
Maybe not you, you might not see it
Or their approval, I don’t need it

I choose to love simply because
Long ago I came undone
And in that loss my hope was found
And I’ve learned that’s how life is won
